Gilbert softball completed a sweep of Higley on Tuesday afternoon with the hosts using a huge second inning to run-rule the Knights, 14-2, in a 5A San Tan Region contest.

Senior pitcher Selma Wagner controlled Higley's lineup for the second time. She wasn't as dominant this time, but solid enough allowing five hits, walking two and striking out two. Wagner tossed a one-hitter and fanned 11 in Gilbert's 7-1 win on March 25.

Gilbert remained unscathed in San Tan Region play. The Tigers are 15-5 overall, 5-0 in region. They've won seven of their last nine games. Higley is 10-4, 1-4.

Gilbert sent 12 batters to the plate and tallied eight runs in the second, breaking a 1-1 tie. The Tigers delivered five hits and Higley chipped in with two errors in the second frame making it an easy outing for Wagner. Madison Mendoza and Arianna Leon stroked extra-base hits in the outburst - Mendoza a two-run triple and Leon an RBI double. Gilbert finished with just six hits, but adding a like number of Higley errors there was plenty of carnage in the 4 1/2-inning game.

Higley pitcher Kyndal Williams took the loss, but likely deserved a better fate. The Knights committed errors in every inning. Williams was the only player on either side to collect multiple hits. She homered to left in the first inning giving the Knights a brief and only lead of the day, 1-0.

Gilbert plays two more games this week - Wednesday vs. Campo Verde (region) and Thursday vs. Mesquite. a win over Campo Verde would clinch the region title. Higley hosts Betty Fairfax on Thursday.

Higley's Kyndal Williams is greeted at home after giving her team a 1-0 lead after 1st-inning home run. (Azpreps365 photo).
