Notre Dame Prep edges Brophy Prep

Notre Dame Prep pulled away from a late tie with a 7-0 run and defeated Brophy Prep, 65-61, to wrap up the second day of competition at the 15th Annual Visit Mesa Basketball Challenge at Mesa Mountain View High School.

Notre Dame Prep and Brophy Prep are each 1-1 in the tournament that continues for the next two days. Notre Dame Prep got double-figure scoring from four of its starters led by sophomores Bryce Quinet with 19 points and Brennan Peterson with 15. Juniors Anthony Batson Jr. and Mitchell Perkins checked in with 13 and 10 points, respectively. Senior Arman Madi and freshman Daylen Sharper paced Brophy Prep with 17 points apiece. The game was knotted at 51 with 3:40 to play. Baskets by Peterson (a three), Quinet and two free throws by Batson gave Notre Dame Prep enough cushion (58-51) to win without final second tension.

Brophy led at halftime 26-23 with Sharper scoring 12 of his 17 points. The Broncos connected on five threes in the half, two by Sharper. Notre Dame Prep hung in the first half thanks to 13 points from Quinet. Peterson, Perkins and Batson eased the scoring burden on Quinet after intermission. In the second half Peterson scored 13 of his 15, Perkins eight of his 10 and Batson 10 of his 13.

Records for teams after two days of play in the tournament: Five are unbeaten - Benet Academy IL (2-0), Corner Canyon UT (2-0), Federal Way (WA) 2-0; Olympia WA (2-0) and Perry (2-0). Six are 1-1 - Jefferson NY, Brophy, Notre Dame Prep, Pinnacle, Salpointe and Thunder Ridge CO. Schools seeking their first tourney win - Brooklyn Collegiate NY, Higley, Ironwood, Mountain View and Snow Canyon UT.

Marquee game on Wednesday's schedule is the 8:30 p.m. contest featuring tourney unbeatens Perry and Federal Way WA.
