Desert Vista's Tatum Heeres fed Rachel Ressler from 15 yards out in the 25th minute Wednesday afternoon as the Thunder dominated, but edged Red Mountain, 1-0, in a pivotal girls pool play match at the Bill Vanney Tempe Diablos Soccer Tournament at Tempe Sports Complex.

Desert Vista (5-1) won Pool C with three shutout victories. The Thunder face Pool D winner Corona del So in one of Thursday's (Dec. 6) semifinals at 6 p.m. Corona del Sol and Mountain View tied with 2-0-1 records and tied each other. Corona nabbed the pool title by virtue of a better goals-differential. The other girls semi matches Pool A winner Hamilton against Pool B winner Highland, also at 6 p.m. Highland won a third straight pool game, 2-1, over Chandler. Hamilton was the final team to earn a berth, beating Mountain Pointe in a late game Wednesday night, 3-1.

In the boys tournament, Hamilton clinched Pool A with a 3-1 win over Mesa High. The Huskies earned a semifinal berth Thursday at 6 p.m. against Pool B winner Chandler. Chandler wrapped up Pool B on Tuesday with its 3-0 triumph over Westwood and prevailed again Wednesday, topping Highland, 2-1. The other Thursday semifinal matches Pool C winner Desert Vista against Pool D winner Red Mountain. Red Mountain's 1-0 victory over Perry on Wednesday gave the Mountain Lions a pool play record of 2-1. That enabled them to edge Gilbert (1-1-1) and Corona del Sol (1-1-1)  for the top spot in the pool. Adrian Rodriguez scored the goal for Red Mountain off a corner kick by Carson Frost in the 16th minute. Desert Vista finished 3-0 in its pool and knocked off Marcos de Niza, 6-2, on Wednesday to clinch its pool. Red Mountain and Desert Vista also play their semifinal match Thursday at 6 p.m.
