Sunnyside fell short in winning the Flowing Wells Wrestling Invitational for one of the rare times last year. The Blue Devils bounced back in fine fashion this year.

Sunnyside  advanced six wrestlers to title matches on Saturday and two prevailed to highlight an impressive performance at the 47th FWI at Flowing Wells High School.

Sunnyside had the team title wrapped up by early Saturday afternoon. Overall Sunnyside had 10 wrestlers place (top-six finish). Sunnyside finished with 240 points to easily outdistance runner-up Mesa Mountain View (169). The team race was tight after that with Corona del Sol (160.5), Santiago, CA  (160), and last year's champion Ironwood Ridge (154). Rounding out the top 10 were Chandler (134.5) Cibola (120.5), Desert Vista (117), Thunderbird (113) and Boulder Creek (100).

Winning titles for Sunnyside were Sergio Miranda , a 7-1 decision over Santiago's Jeremy Thomas at 120 pounds and Gabriel Gonzalez, an 8-4 winner over Willcox's Ben Miller at 195. Santiago finished with the most champions (3). Chandler and Corona del Sol joined Sunnyside with two apiece. Santiago's Christian Pagdilao (145) was named the tournament's outstanding wrestler with a pin, three shutouts, technical fall and a major decision.

The other individual champions were Santiago's Chris Lacayo (6-0 over Maryvale's Alex Calderon at 106); Marana Mountain View's Bailey Janis (9-5 over Sunnyside's Juaquin Olivas at 113); Chandler's Tristan Moran (7-6 over Sunnyside's William Olivas); Corona del Sol's Glenn Farina (17-2 technical fall over Mesa Mtn. View's Steven Mason at 132); Santiago's Mike Longo (4-2 over Sunnyside's Raul Moraga at 138); Santiago's  Pagdilao (7-0 over Rio Rico's Mark Lopez at 145); Corona del Sol's Ethan Tursini (8-6 overtime over Cibola's Pierre Gaud at 160); Queen Creek's Hayden Moore (4-2 over Mesa Mtn. View's Grant Huber at 170); Desert Vista's Alex Bambic (5-2 over Corona del Sol's Michael Clare at 182); Chandler's Drew Lattner (4-2 in overtime over Rio Rico's Patrick Penniston at 220) and Mesa Mtn View's Uasike Kilisimasi (3-1 overtime over Sunnyside's Ricky Villegas at HWT).

Only one wrestler repeated as a Flowing Wells champion on Saturday -- Ironwood Ridge's Matt Filbert. Filbert topped Chandler's Dalton Moran, 7-2, at 152 pounds. Chandler standout Dalton Brady sat out resting an injury while injury defaults during the tournament felled defending tournament champ Thundebird's Ryan Felipe (120) and tournament No. 1 seed Boulder Creek's Jro Byrd (170). Marcos de Niza's Jesse Morales, the tournament champion at 132 last year, finished third. Only four wrestlers among 11 who won state titles last year were champs on Saturday night -- Janis, Tristan Moran, Filbert and Bambic.
