New sections out, new state qualifications, sked timeline

Every Arizona Interscholastic Association school member has been assigned a section for the next two-year scheduling block.

The AIA released the links with the new sections on Wednesday.

A couple of notes on some of the section changes the AIA’s executive board made based on the Division II section appeals it received from Phoenix area schools, which affected the northern Arizona, Yuma and Lake Havasu schools:

The northern Arizona, Yuma and Lake Havasu schools were placed in the same section, but those schools will each only play one computer scheduled game in their areas. That applies to only those schools’ basketball, soccer, tennis, baseball and softball teams.

For the six volleyball teams in the Yuma/Lake Havasu section, it will only have one automatic qualifier for the state tournament.

The metro Phoenix area teams were placed into sections based on the computer scheduling program. A hybrid section was created for the northern Arizona, Yuma and Lake Havasu schools to help decrease the amount of teams that were placed in the metro Phoenix sections.

Numbers of teams qualifying for state, determining section champs for 2013-15

On Tuesday, the AIA’s executive board also approved the recommendations the AIA’s sports advisory committees made for qualifying for state during the 2013-15 seasons.

Below are the amount of teams that will qualify in each sport and the number of teams that will automatically qualify from each section. Beginning in the fall of 2013, the teams with the highest win percentage will be crowned section champions, and only the computer scheduled games will count toward your section standings.

If teams schedule freedom games with other teams in their section, those games won’t count toward their section standings. Those games will count in the rankings, however.

In case of a tie, a section champion will be determined by head-to-head competition and then overall ranking.
