Basketball coaching openings emerge at Tempe, McClintock

It seems no East Valley school district is immune from basketball coaching openings as the Tempe district joined the fray with Paul Long stepping away at Tempe High as boys coach and McClintock girls coach Andrew Pezzuto stepping aside.

Long, who coached for more than a decade at Trevor Browne, four years at Horizon and took a year off last year before taking over at Tempe High, ciited "family reasons" for leaving Tempe, according to the East Valley Tribune's Mark Heller. Tempe posted an 18-8 record in Long's only season, just missing a state playoff berth. Pezzuto guided McClintock's girls for two seasons. The Lady Chargers were 13-36 in that span, just 2-20 in the recently completed season.

Since the basketball regular season ended, at least seven coaches have resigned in Mesa, Gilbert, Chandler or Tempe -- Skyline's Michael Wirth (boys), Campo Verde's Neil MacDonald (boys), Basha's John Burns (boys), Chandler's Mike Ellsworth (boys) and Perry's Richard Trujillo (girls) are the others.
