The Blue Ridge girls soccer dynasty continues to roll.

The program won its eighth state small school fall championship Saturday since 2003, defeating a Northland Prep team that has plenty of reasons to feel proud despite Saturday’s 5-0 loss at Campo Verde High. This was only the fourth season of girls soccer for Northland Prep, which reached its first title game despite dressing only two seniors this season.

The three-time state defending Blue Ridge Lady Yellow Jackets also didn’t have that much experience on this year’s team after saying goodbye to 11 seniors in 2013. In terms of soccer scores, this was a blowout, but it was anything but that during the first 22 minutes of the match.

Up to that point, it was an evenly played match. But a couple of defensive breakdowns then led to Blue Ridge scoring two goals within a 14 second span.

On the first goal, Emily Orona’s high shot went off the hands of Northland Prep’s goalkeeper before rolling in. Orona was a defender at the start of the season before she suffered an injury that kept her out for about a month.

But when she returned Blue Ridge coach Rhonda Rydberg said after Saturday’s game that she felt that Orona would help bolster Blue Ridge’s offense and certainly did so Saturday. Cammie Edgington set up the second goal all by herself as she attacked Northland Prep’s back line.

She was able to get off the goal scoring shot to the near post just before crashing into defenders.

“Those first two goals helped settle us down,” Blue Ridge coach Rydberg said.

The second half turned into the Hannah Flodin show.

The sophomore recorded a hat trick in that half to cap Blue Ridge’s 18-2-2 Division IV season in style.

“I am so proud of them,” Rydberg said of her team.
