TEAMS

# 1 Corona del Sol: The Aztecs were a crowd-pleasing 33-1 last season capping their Division I fourpeat with a resounding title-game win over Desert Vista. They feature the top recruit in the country in some circles in 6-foot-10 sophomore center Marvin Bagley III. Corona won't have all its returning ammo this weekend as junior standout guard Alex Barcello is away at an elite invite. New head coach Neil MacDonald has a couple experienced players in tow with Tyrell Henderson and Saban Lee.

#2 Gilbert Christian: The Knights feature more key returnees than any team in the field -- a team that won the Division II championship. Gilbert Christian won 25 games last year and has seniors Cameron Satterwhite, Mitch Lightfoot, Dontez Thomas and Tony Locavoli setting their sights on a repeat. It can be a "pick your poison" when trying to defend this squad. The former trio mentioned above averaged 46 points a game between them in 2014-2015.

#3 Shadow Mountain: Some turnover from last year's 23-7 Matadors, ousted in the D-II semifinals by Gilbert Christian. Senior guard Michael Bibby Jr.  is making his way back from a knee injury that sidelined hm for a substantial chunk of 14-15. Jeffrey Rhymes and Issiah Jones are also back trying to lift Shadow Mountain back to the top spot come this winter in D-II.

#4 Desert Vista: The Thunder aren't totally void of the lineup that ran into the Corona buzzsaw in last year's D-I final. Junior Caleb Simmons and senior Tarik Cool are the mainstays. Cool is set to participate this weekend, but Simmons will not. Three starters graduated so Simmons and Cool may have to carry a bigger load for Tony Darden in his second year as Desert Vista's mentor. Desert Vista kept on Corona's heels last year in a 26-5 season, including giving the Aztecs a scare in the regular season.

#5 Perry: This won't be the Pumas of the past two seasons, but coach Joe Babinski is looking forward to a competivie season nonetheless. Standout guard Markus Howard has moved on to Findlay Prep and graduation took three other spots from 14-15's starting cast. Perry, 22-7 last year and eliminated in the playoffs by Desert Vista, has some summer injuries, one of which will keep John Schlangen, a starter last year, from participating. Perry will have its work cut out for it in this event.

#6 Mesa Mountain View: The Toros surprised plenty of folks last year with a hard charge to the Division I semifinals where it bowed out to Desert Vista with a 23-win campaign. The state's all-tiime winningest coach Gary Ernst returns guard Tommy Kuhse to lead this year's club. Kuhse wowed fans with terrific perimeter shooting and will be relied on for more of the same. The Toros graduated some size, but have a handful of seasoned players returning with Kuhse, including seniors Zane Jowaiszas, John Trendler and guard Darin Tingey.

#7 Chaparral: The Firebirds were right there in D-I last year scrapping with the big boys in posting a 26-6 record. Graduation took a toll on the frontline players from last year for coach Dan Peterson. Top returnee is junior guard Colten Kresl, who averaged 11 points a game last year and another guard, JT Thomas, managed decent playing time. Kresl hit for a season-high 23 points vs. Desert Vista last year and connected for 16 in a quarterfinal loss to Corona.

#8 Basha: When healthy the Bears field a larger-than-average lineup and third-year coach Mke Grothaus has many of the same troops he finished 14-15 with at his disposal. Klay Stall, who averaged 12 points and 11 rebounds a game last year, is a 6-9 senior. His participation is questionable after an injury suffered last weekend. Senior guard Nick Brewer and junior guard Gabe Mcglothan logged plenty of minutes andaveraged 14 points game between them. Junior big man Devin Kirby is working his way back from a horrific set of injuries suffered last December in a holiday tournament game and won't play.
