Corona bests Gilbert Christian for PrimeTime crown

Top-seed Corona del Sol and No. 2 seed Gilbert Christian were Division I and Division II boys hoops champs last year, respectively, and got a chance to meet Saturday afternoon in the final of the 5th annual PrimeTime Boys Basketball Invitational at Chaparral HS.

It was anyone's game at halftime, but a big second half from Marvin Bagley III and steady, superb play from Tyrell Henderson paced Corona del Sol to a 50-41 victory as the Aztecs successfully defended their title in the summer event.

Bagley III, a 6-foot-10 sophomore with offers from elite schools across the country as one of the most sought-after players, connected for 20 points in the championship game and earned tourney MVP honors for his play across two days. Twelve of those 20 points came in the second half  - most during an 18-4 run  - that put Corona in command 44-30 with a little more than eight minutes to play. The teams were deadlocked at 26 at intermission.

Bagley and Gilbert Christian's 6-9 senior post Mitch Lightfoot engaged in a tight battle the first half with Lightfoot outscoring Bagley, 11-8. Lightfoot, who chipped a tooth and had another loosened in a collision in the semifinals against Shadow Mountain, picked up his third foul late in the first half. That didn't bode well for Gilbert Christian. Lightfoot  was effectively neutralized on the offensive end in the second half by Bagley and good, helping defense by Corona. Lightfoot scored two points in the second half -- a pair of free throws with under a minute left and the game out of reach.

"(Lightfoot) was in foul trouble so we wanted to go to Marvin," Corona del Sol coach Neil MacDonald said. ".....Overall it was a good performance this weekend as a team. We got a little better each game, and made a big jump in our play the first game (Saturday) against Perry."

Both teams were missing a key player that figures to be instrumental when the 2015-2016 season commences in November -- Gilbert Christian didn't have guard Dontez Thomas and Corona was without guard Alex Barcello. While Bagley cleaned up offensively in the second half for the Aztecs, senior Tyrell Henderson, an important cog in the Aztecs' title runs the last couple of seasons, was all over the court. He scored 12 of his 16 points in the first half and was solid on defense as well.

"There was a lot of focus on Marvin and that left me with more lanes and chances," Henderson said.

Henderson took advantage as a veteran player might.

"This was his best performance of the summer,": MacDonald said of Henderson. "We needed scoring from aonther spot and he gave us some. I think we had enough gas in the tank to finish the tournament. Both teams were getting a little tired."

Gilbert Christian senior forward Tony Licavoli, another key returnee for the Knights, augmented Lightfoot's output. Livacoli didn't miss many shots, especially in the first half. He scored 12 in the opening half and finished with a team-high 18 points.

Corona advanced to the final earlier Saturday by defeating No. 5 Perry, 68-46. Bagley scored 25 points in that game and Jake Burroughs added 11. Gilbert Christian earned its spot in the final by knocking off No. 3 Shadow Mountain, 59-51. Cameron Satterwhite's 22 points led the victory.

Shadow Mountain went on to claim third place with a 61-51 win over Perry. No. 8 Basha edged No. 6 Mesa Mountain View, 55-52, in double overtime, finished by way of a free-throw shootout between the teams. No. 4 Desert Vista nabbed seventh place topping No. 7 Chaparral, 70-62.
