Twenty-four teams, including many of the perennial softball powers, are entered in the 14th annual Desert Mountain Invitational Tournament Tuesday through Saturday at Horizon Park.

The tournament features defending 5A-I champ Red Mountain, 5A-II champ Centennial, 4A-II champ Seton Catholic, 5A-I runner-up St. Mary's and southern Arizona standouts Canyon del Oro and Sabino. Canyon del Oro and Sabino were 4A-I semifinalists last season. Desert Mountain was among the final six teams in 5A-II last year, Gilbert (5A-I) a quarterfinalist and Notre Dame (4A-II) a quarterfinalist.

Centennial won the tournament last year beating Sabino, 5-2, in the title game. In the first 13 years of the tournament 11 different teams have won the title. The only repeat winner is Red Mountain, which has won the tournament three times.

Teams with the best power-point game records so far this season entered in the tournament  are Pinnacle (7-0), Red Mountain (6-0), Queen Creek (5-0), Desert Mountain (4-0), Saguaro (5-1), Horizon (5-1), Ironwood Ridge (4-1), Canyon del Oro (4-1), Notre Dame (4-1), Chaparral (3-1), Mesquite (3-1) and Gilbert (4-2).

Games will be held Tuesday through Friday with four contests each at 3 p.m., 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. at Horizon Park. A championship bracket (top 8 teams) and two consolation brackets (teams 9-through 16 and teams 17-24) wil be determined through a power-point system for play all day on Saturday. Teams 1-16 will compete Saturday at Horizon Park; teams 17-24 on Saturday at Desert Mountain HS.
