Volleyball: Fountain Hills (3A), Horizon Honors (2A) crowned champs

Sweeps were the order of the evening Saturday at the 3A and 2A volleyball finals at North High School. Horizon Honors and Fountain Hills did the sweeping.

Horizon Honors (30-4) playing at a high level, dispatched Chandler Prep (27-12) for the third time in two weeks with a 25-16, 25-14, 25-19 victory in the 2A final. It was the first team sport athletic triumph in Horizon Honor's history. The school has won some activity crowns, but no athletics titles until coach Kris Maglunog's team proved dominant this night.

"This team came in full of confidence," Magnlunog said. We lost to Chandler Prep in the semifinals last year. We learned from that. This year we had the experience and volleyball-wise we are good. We worked harder on the intangibles, energy level, things like that."

The season couldn't have ended any better for senior and four-year starter Alexa Smythe. Smythe contributed 13 kills and 13 assists, leading the Eagles i the former stat for the match. Senior setter Mchelle Ogle pitched in with 16 assists and six kills. Defensively it was Erica Kendree (18 digs), Giuliana Castronova (15 digs) and Gabriella Castronova (13 digs) helping to neutralize Chandler Prep's attack. 

Chandler Prep settled for its second successive runner-up finish. The Titans were second in D-III last year Greenway. Senior Taylor Sheppy led Chandler Prep with 13 kills unofficially.

Chandler Prep advanced to the final by sweeping Scottsdale Christian, 3-0. Horizon Honors did likewise topping Veritas Prep.

In the battle for 3A supremacy, No. 3 seed Fountain HIlls (36-9) was able to shake off the strain of a five-set semifinal victory over Valley Christian and defeat top-seed Northwest Christian, 26-24, 25-12, 25-19 in the championship match. It was Fountain HIlls first volleyball crown since 1997. 

Fountain HIlls won 22 of its final 23 matches. The one loss was to Valley Christian, who shared the region title with Fountain HIlls. The teams traded sweeps with each other in region play.

"I think our aggressive serving was the key," Fountain Hills coach Peter McGloin said. "Both teams weren't at their best. We both spent a lot of emotion and energy in our semfiinal matches. We got the first set and then Alyssa (Barbagallo) served that 11-0 run in the second set that gave us some distance. We were able to finish and got strong games from KC (McMahon) and Amara (Feyrer-Melk)."

McMahon and Feyrer-Melk, both juniors, led the attack for the Falcons with 17 kills and 15 kiills, respectively. Feyrer-Melk's 15 kills came with no errors.

Northwest Christian gained its spot in the final with a 3-1 victory over Snowflake. Snowflake threatend to win the fourth set and extend the match to a fiffh building an eight-point lead at the midpoint before NWC rallied to finish it, 26-24. Northwest Christian finiished up the season 27-7. The Crusaders beat Fountain HIlls the first week of the season in five sets.

In the 1A title match, St. David erased an 0-2 deficit to knock off Mogollon for is seventhv olleyball title in school history and first since 2013. Scores were 19-25, 25-27, 25-20, 25-22 and 15-6.
