Return of Lavin brings stability to Bourgade football

July 21, 2011 by Don Ketchum, AZPreps365

From the dry desert floor sprouts a blade of grass.

Pat Lavin is returning to Phoenix Bourgade Catholic as head coach.

That is not to say that the Golden Eagles will jump right out and win the new Division V championship, but they should be competitive.

Lavin, who was coach at Bourgade for eight seasons, brings leadership and a certain stability. There isn’t too much he hasn’t seen. He formerly coached at his alma mater, Phoenix St. Mary’s, where he won a pair of state championships.

He also was at Phoenix Paradise Valley and Avondale Agua Fria. At Agua Fria, one of his players was Randall McDaniel, who went on to star as an offensive lineman at Arizona State and became a Hall of Famer in the NFL.

Leaders in the Arizona Football Coaches Association should be able to pick his brain for ideas.

The Arizona high school community is better for Lavin’s return.
