The Chandler Prep Titans remain undefeated in the Class 2A Valley Region after their 3-0 win against the Gilbert Classical Academy Spartans.

After two 3-0 losses against Chandler Prep (10-4, 9-0) this season, Spartans junior Avery Sorensen said she is still proud of her team for trying harder this time around.

“It is disappointing to lose again, but I’m really proud of my team and how far we’ve come from when we last played them,” Sorensen said. “It wasn’t well put together. We were a mess, but we really were unified this game.”

While the teamwork was there for GCA  (6-9, 3-6)., the players said the lack of passion and the will to fight was lost.

“Unfortunately, we didn’t have all the fire that we usually do when we play, so next time we are definitely going to be ready to go,” Sorensen said.

Freshman Angelina Lazer said after the first set the bench would try to cheer as loud as possible to raise the energy up for the Spartans, but she still could feel the intensity lacking during the second set.

After being down 18-10 in the second set, Lazer said the team probably just looked at the score and thought it was over.

But the fight in them sparked a match in the second set after a timeout called by Coach Kiana Hiapo. With Jordann Delozier serving, the Spartans scored six points in a row making the score a lot closer, 18-16.

“Coach always tells us to fight and go back harder,” Lazer said.

But the fight ended short for Gilbert Classical and Chandler Prep came out stronger, winning the set 25-18 and also taking the third set 25-16.

Even with a negative loss, positive energy remains constant with the Spartans. Sorensen said she was mostly proud of her attitude this season, after easily getting frustrated with herself in the past.

“It’s not a one-person game, it’s a team game and I often forget that,” Sorensen said. “But this year everyone really came together, and it was really awesome.”

With one regular-season game remaining, the Spartans take on No. 3 seed in the region, Tempe Prep, on Thursday night.
